Simplified estimate for common categories. For an official determination, use the FDIC's Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator (EDIE) or the NCUA's Share Insurance Estimator, or contact the FDIC or NCUA directly. Money-market funds, stocks, bonds, crypto, annuities and safe-deposit-box contents are not deposits and are not covered.
How the categories work
- Per institution
- Branches of the same bank don't add coverage. Different brand names of one chartered bank share one limit.
- Joint accounts
- Each co-owner's share is insured to $250,000, so a two-person joint account is covered to $500,000.
- Trust accounts
- Since April 1, 2024, FDIC rules cover $250,000 per owner per beneficiary, up to five beneficiaries ($1.25 million per owner). NCUA applies parallel rules to credit-union shares.
- Retirement
- Deposits in IRAs and similar self-directed plans are a separate $250,000 category.
